Carnival of Money Stories #83: Making The Fantasy Football Playoffs Edition

Welcome to the 83rd edition of the Carnival of Money Stories on December 6, 2010.  There were a lot of fantastic articles this week and I hope you enjoy what I felt are some of the best personal finance stories out there.

Please keep in mind that many submissions were not selected, not because they weren’t great articles, but because they didn’t match the theme of the carnival, which is stories about money.

The theme this week is ‘making the fantasy football playoffs’.  For those who indulge in playing in a league (or for some I know, up to six leagues), the next week or two is when fantasy football playoffs begin.  For leagues involving money, jackpots are on the line.  Below are a few things that dictate whether teams get in to the playoffs in fantasy football leagues.  Enjoy the carnival!

Drafting: Have a plan of attack on draft night but don’t be afraid to deviate from it if the right player falls into your lap.  Have at least two or three ‘sleepers’ identified that you think could turn into superstars.

Tim Chen presents Kim Kardashian Credit Card Gets Put Where It Belongs – In the Trash posted at NerdWallet Blog – Credit Card Watch

Sun presents Mint.com Cut Ties with Yodlee? posted at The Sun’s Financial Diary.

Erin Pavlina presents How I Got Every Job I Ever Wanted posted at Erin Pavlina – Spiritual Wisdom for Conscious People

Thursday Bram presents How We Slashed Our Rent in Half (and Why We’re Not Crazy) posted at Currency.

Pinyo presents Why Budgeting is like Dating posted at Moolanomy.

The Financial Blogger presents From $18,403 to $124,514 In A Single Year! posted at The Financial Blogger

Finding That Diamond In the Rough: For those who play or know football, do the names Arian Foster, Peyton Hillis, or Mike Vick mean anything?  They are guys that were probably drafted low or not drafted at all, but have put up huge stats.  If you were lucky enough to target one of these guys and land them on your team, chances are you’re thinking about your playoff strategy.

Barb Friedberg presents Why I Have No Budget This Year posted at Barbara Friedberg Personal Finance

Knowing Your League: If the other members in your league love to trade, then drafting a ton of running backs might be a great strategy.  If nobody trades, then loading up might leave you with gaping holes for the season.  Know the fellow players in your league and play their tendencies to your advantage.

FMF presents Real-Life Case Study: How to Take Early Semi-Retirement, Part 1 posted at Free Money Finance

Luck: No matter how good or bad you are on draft night, on making trades, or picking up guys off the waiver wire, there is the factor of luck that nobody can predict.  Will you have a bunch of easy or hard matchups?  Will you have a slew of injuries?  Will your opponent sit the wrong guy, handing you the win?  I’ve played in a lot of fantasy sports leagues over the years, and luck has been a huge factor in each and every one.

Festival of Frugality #249: The Weary Traveler Edition

Welcome to the 249th edition of the Festival of Frugality.  This is my first time hosting this particular festival, which is designed to highlight personal finance articles that encourage frugality.  I’ve chosen the fifteen articles below as this week’s best articles.

As you read through the articles, think about all of the times you’ve been the ‘weary’ traveler.  It sure seems that there are more and more things designed to make traveling less fun and certainly less frugal.  Still, there are ways to combat travel weariness, and I’ve highlighted just a few within the article.

Onto the articles!

Donna Freedman presents If life is the currency, I’m already rich. posted at Surviving and Thriving.

Craig Ford presents 10 Ways to Save Money On Gas posted at Money Help For Christians.

Neal Frankle presents Cheap Term Life Insurance ? What To Watch Out For posted at Wealth Pilgrim.

Airline fees are the most talked about charge added to traveling in years.  Pack lightly, and even consider shipping your bags to your destination beforehand as a possible money saving option.

FMF presents Are You Ready to Move to Get a Raise? posted at Free Money Finance.

Squirrelers presents Squirreling Gone Wild #14 – The Frugal Flower Bandits posted at Squirrelers.

Roshawn Watson presents 7 Surprising Facts About Millionaires posted at Watson Inc.

Jason presents The Magic Toilet posted at Live Real, Now

Companies change the rules all the time.  From flights delayed or canceled to car reservations that end up not having a car available, things can change.  Prepare by printing out all of your agreement information and keeping it with you, and always have a backup option planned out as a ‘just in case’ to reduce the impact of potential changes.

John presents How Much Money Can a 15 Year Home Loan Refinance Save You? posted at Passive Family Income.

J. Money presents Do You Still Want to Live in a Mansion? posted at Budgets Are Sexy.

Kristina presents Banking Solutions for Travelers posted at Dual Income No Kids.

Lauren presents The Most Fiscally Irresponsible Song Lyrics posted at Richly Reasonable.

Fellow airline passengers or neighboring hotel room guests can be a game changer in any trip.  From the airline seatmate who pounds back a couple too many drinks or hasn’t showered in days to the hotel guest who decides to hold a party, your nerves can get frayed quickly.  In many cases, packing a set of earphones / earplugs as well as your patience, is your best bet to happy travels!

freefrombroke presents 5 Simple Steps To Save On Food Shopping posted at Free From Broke.

Paul Williams presents Living in Poverty: What Would It Look Like? posted at Provident Planning.

PT presents 10 Cheap and Creative Halloween Costumes for 2010 posted at PT Money.

vh presents Managing a Variable Income: A bouquet of bank accounts posted at Funny about Money.

I appreciate you taking the time to check out this week’s carnival and hope you found at least one or two frugal tips or thoughts.    Next week’s edition of the Festival of Frugality will be hosted by Before You Invest, so get your articles submitted to be included!

Carnival of Money Stories: August 2, 2010

Welcome to the August 2, 2010 edition of The Carnival of Money Stories.

We spent this weekend at a family members house that lives on a beautiful lake.  We had a very fun time, and we never left once we got there except to leave.  Our money story is that we had a great mini-vacation just for the cost of gas and a food stop on the way there.  Not bad!
