Friday Favorites – September 22, 2017

Today is the first day of fall but you would never know it.  We are getting the summer that some say we never had.  It is HOT!  Temperatures are at or near 90 degrees!  And it will be like this through the first part of next week.

We are taking advantage of the time and going for a quick camping weekend.  And, we’re going to the beach!  Tomorrow

will be the hottest beach day we’ve had all season in all of our trips.

Crazy!

Here are some recent posts around the personal finance blog world that I love.

I hope you have a great weekend!  Happy reading.

Random Roundup – September 15, 2017

Happy Friday.  We’re getting some summer like weather here in Michigan.  It’s been a pretty chilly few weeks, with below average temps for much of the last month.  We’ll be enjoying the warm temps though we already have some fall colors and leaves dropping.

Saturday Sprinkle #4

Hi all.  I hope you had a great week.  Here are some random thoughts and lots of great blog posts that I wanted to share.

  • Great Weekend Ahead – We had a really warm start to March, but the thing is, even when you’re 10 degrees above normal, it’s still pretty cool.  Since then we’ve had a cold spell that finally broke this week.  Now, we’ve got temps set to hit the 60’s and 70’s for the next week straight.  It’s finally spring time in Michigan and we plan to be outdoors to celebrate!
  • The Great Life – Have you ever noticed that some people have an absolute perfect life?  At least according to their social media!  Femme Frugality wisely points out that you can’t let what others post about their lives steal the joy from yours.
  • Tupperware – This stuff lasts forever, right?  Well not always, but they do offer a lifetime warranty, and Amanda at Frugal Confessions put it to the test with some pretty positive results!
  • What You Don’t Know – Some people love to plan things down to the final detail, but as much as that can work in many ways, there are always things that are going to pop up.  Mom & Dad Money discuss how to deal with uncertainty when it comes your way.
  • Why Go Out Of Your Way? – Sometimes you see people doing little things for others and you wonder if it can really make a difference?  I happened across this foreign commercial that shows that yes, it’s possible.
  • Flying The Amateur Skies – We don’t do much flying, but I did enough that we avoid most of these faux pauxs committed by airport amateurs as noted by Penny Hoarder , though I have to admit, I have seen many of these. actually happen.
  • The Best Time – When is it time to make a fresh start or start going for that long desired goal that you keep putting off?  Christina at Northern Cheapskate thinks the time might be right now!
  • Half Hearted Landlord – You hear more and more stories, especially after the burst of the housing bubble, where people move but decide to rent out their former house.  Sometimes this works, but as Will points out at Growing the Green, you might just want to think twice, especially if your heart really isn’t in it.
  • Not In My Backyard – We’ve all heard of the ‘not in my backyard’ syndrome, and while sometimes you have situations where it’s a good idea that people just don’t want near them, sometimes, as Funny About Money points out, it’s just a bad idea that does no good at all.

Have a great weekend!

Saturday Sprinkle #3

I don’t know about you, but this has just been a long week.  I am happy it’s Saturday!  Here are a few things happening and some great articles that I’ve read over the last couple of weeks.

  • So Much For That – Last week I wrote about how Thursdays had turned into pizza nights as a result of our kids having swim lessons.  And, wouldn’t you know it we already switched days!  One of our kids moved up to a more advanced level, and they didn’t offer both kids classes at the same time on Thursdays, so Fridays it is!  Still planning on pizza after swim lessons, though!
  • When Not To Be Cheap – There are a lot of different ideas on when it’s OK to buy the ‘cheaper’ brand and when you want to avoid it.  I am always fascinated by the different perspectives.  Kayla at Eyes on the Dollar gives her thoughts here.
  • Make Food Last Longer – There are few things more frustrating than buying something at the grocery store only to have it go bad before you get to using it.  The Penny Hoarder lists 21 foods and how to store them, and some of these I definitely didn’t know!
  • When Kids Outgrow Pools – We have a small kiddie pool for our kids and it’ll definitely be coming out this summer.  But what do you do when the kids get too big?  How about create a garden?  I know, I never thought of it either!
  • Fixing Kitchen Mistakes – Have you ever cooked something and ended up with more of it on the bottom of the pan than you actually got out of it?  It happens!  Here are some tips to get the food off that burnt off pan.
  • Is The American Dream Dead? – I’ve lamented a few times that I think the American Dream, where each generation can hope to do better than the last from a financial perspective, is dead or dying.  Stefanie O’Connell wonders if maybe, now that the dream is a few generations old, it’s time to re-write just what we expect that dream to deliver.  Very interesting idea!
  • April Fool’s Get You? – I didn’t get sucked into any big April Fool’s jokes this year.  Maybe that’s good, or maybe it just means nobody tried hard enough!  LOL.  What about you, did you get taken by any pranks yesterday?
  • Follow Your Dreams – You can reach your goals.  If you find that you’re not reaching your goals, here are a few things you might want to look at that could be holding you back.
