Our Tips For Saving Money

Before we get started, let me just point out that these are things we do to save money.  They work for our household, but they may not be for everybody.  In any case, I hope they give you some ideas to get started.

Brew Coffee

I can’t tell you the last time I set foot in a coffee shop.  If we get gift cards for Starbucks, we usually sell them.  We either make our own individual cups or pots of coffee.  This saves us big time.

Stock Up

We have a pantry shelf in our basement.  This is great for stocking up on items that last a long time.  We like to keep a good stock of canned goods, pastas and sauces, cereals and other items that we can catch on sale.  As long as you avoid waste, which we do, you can end up with some good savings.

Drive Smarter

The people behind you might not like it, but starting off slowly from a stoplight will save on gas.  Most gas is burned during the acceleration process.  The harder you press down, the more gas you’ll burn.   Take it easy and get better mileage.

Travel With Deals

When we travel, we always look for deals.  Even on our Disney trips, we’ve booked when they offer free dining.  There’s no reason not to enjoy yourself, but there’s no reason to keep some of your money while enjoying your time away.

Buy And Sell Items Online

We have made some decent money recently selling on Facebook Marketplace.  This is a great way to get some cash from items that are still good but that you don’t need.  Take a look around.  You might find items that you can get that will save you money instead of buying new.  And, if you can resell them later, some items you can get practically for free!

Drink Water Instead of Soda At Restaurants

We don’t usually buy soda or iced tea at restaurants.  Water is better for you and it’s free.

Take Advantage of Happy Hour

OK, so it’s not *always* water for us.  We enjoy the occasional adult beverage while dining out. When we do, we try to take advantage of happy hour specials wherever possible.

Avoid Vending Machines

I once got so mad at the vending machines at work that I went on a years long boycott.  Overall, this is a sound strategy even if you aren’t holding a grudge.   The products are always overpriced and usually bad for you.

Visit the Library

The library is a great place for books, movies, games, and other items.  Our family goes regularly.  They even have a pretty great selection of books I can download onto my Kindle.  That’s really cool.

Use Cash Back Credit Cards

We have two different credit cards with cash back rewards.  Each offers bonus cash back on certain categories.  These help pay for our vacations or electronics.  It’s like free money.

Don’t Pay Credit Card Interest

In order to maximize our cash back cards, we always pay them off.  Every month.  If you pay interest on your rewards card, you’re probably giving those rewards right back to the credit card company.

Stash Extra Money Away

Every once in awhile, stash a few bucks aside.  Sometimes when we sell an item online, we’ll take the cash and put it in a drawer.  In a few months when you find it, it’s like you won a small lottery.

These are just a few ideas of things that we do. Each of them seems to save us a little bit of money.  Will these things make us rich?  No.  But, getting rich doesn’t usually happen all at once.  So, it could definitely help!

What are some other ways you save money?  I’d love to hear your ideas.  Let me know in the comments below.

  1. My car has an eco-feature that shows you when you’re getting better gas mileage. It’s definitely made me temper my accelerating most of the time.

Another tip: Cash back shopping sites. If you’re going to make the purchase online anyway, why not get money back?
